Mechanical engineering and drive technology

Plastic drive elements, like rollers, slide bearings and gears for special applications. Produced through machining processes.

Plastics for mechanical engineering and drive technology

Your machines and systems are equipped with components like rollers, gears and slide bearings. Plastics are always the ideal choice when it comes to dealing with specific mechanical wear and friction.

You can choose from a comprehensive range of semi-finished plastic products which will satisfy your individual needs and requirements.

A selection of cutting-edge production equipment is available for manufacturing machined finished components and assemblies made from plastic and metal. As a result, we are able to produce complex parts with outstanding dimensional reliability in line with the strictest tolerance standards.

Rollers and press-on tyres

Your application has to meet the following criteria:

  • Quiet running
  • Good damping action
  • Low wear
  • Protection for the track

The preferred materials in this field are POM, polyamides and PET as well as high performance materials PEEK, PI, PBI.

Sample applications include:

  • Switch rolls and castors for the cable industry
  • Castors for door and gateway drives
  • Press-on tyres for roller coasters

Sliding elements

Plastic sliding elements offer several benefits over metallic materials:

  • Specific strength, rigidity and hardness
  • High resistance to wear and good dry and run-flat properties
  • High damping capacity and low sensitivity to edge loading
  • Maximum possible resistance to penetration by foreign bodies in contaminated environments
  • Good resistance to corrosion and chemicals
  • Approved types for various applications are available, including for direct contact with food, the medical industry, rail applications

The combination of materials is a decisive factor in the design and dimensioning of plastic sliding elements. Blending plastics with metals creates low-wear and low-friction sliding.

Modifying materials with oil or solids (PE-UHMW, PTFE) can increase wear resistance and reduce friction at the same time.

In addition to the selection of materials, the quality of the two surfaces is another crucial factor. This ensures optimum roughness and surface hardness (over 50HRC) of the metallic element.

Depending on the requirements, the following plastics are used in the majority of cases:

PE-UHMW (polyethylene), PTFE (Teflon), PA (polyamide), POM, PETP, PVDF, PEEK, PAI (Torlon), PI, PBI and laminates

Sample applications include:

  • Sliding plates for locomotives
  • Bearing shells
  • Chain guides

Gears

Plastic interlocking gears and sprockets help to bring innovative solutions to life. In contrast to metallic components, plastic interlocking gears exhibit slightly fewer mechanical strength properties. Designs made from the right materials offer a number of benefits:

  • Quiet running thanks to outstanding vibration and shock absorption
  • Low weight
  • High resistance to wear
  • Exceptional run-flat properties
  • Dry running possible
  • Resistance to corrosion

Typical plastics used for gears include PA (polyamide), POM, PETP, PVDF, PEEK and laminates.

Sample applications include:

  • Sprockets and interlocking gears for mechanical engineering
  • Geared pumps for the food industry
